Titling Issues - Customs by Ripper

There seems to be quite a bit of misinformation out there regarding what can and cannot be done with titles and Harley Davidson motorcycles (among others). Here's the correct information for most states (there are some that vary and some that are still in the 19th century, but it will ALL be the same soon enough, so do it right now rather than after your bike is impounded.

For ALL Harley Davidson motorcycles (with the possible exception of some of the Italian smaller models that may or may not have a VIN on them, I'm not sure there):
From 1903 (if there are any VINs that go back that far) up to 1969, the VIN is on the engine and any or all paperwork regarding said vehicle goes along with the engine. From 1970-present, the VIN is on the frame and as such, any or all paperwork regarding said vehicle will go with the frame, not the engine. From 1970-1980 (with the well known 1979 exception), the VIN is also on the engine. This does not mean that the paperwork should go with the engine. You can check out what your bike is supposed to be - HERE

I have heard all of the "My friend has done it this way for 30 years" or "I've done it this way without a problem my whole life" stories, but these same people sometimes have to go the police impound to retrieve their now useless bike. Not only is the bike no longer rideable for legal reasons, but once it's been to the police impound yard, trust me, you don't want it back.

Take this advice. Make sure you know the correct laws for your state. Don't even trust me that I am correct, because in some states, I am not. More and more, however, all states are getting "with the program" of making sure no one is trying to register stolen bikes with legal paperwork. Better to be safe than really, really sorry.
