First, the entire part was sanded with a die grinder with 24, 36 and then 60 grit. It was pretty rough.

Then it was sanded in stages from 80 to 100 to 180 to 220 to 320 on a dual action sander, then wet-sanded with 400, 600, 900, 1000 and then 1500 (the fittings were left in at times to keep the threads from getting gummed up with compound, among other things).

The next step is black aluminum compound on a stiff buffer wheel, then a custom blended mix of metal polishing compounds on a loose wheel. It was hard to get a good picture. The marks you see in these pictures were not there, except in the camera. In person, this cam cover looked perfect.
